Hey Y’all,
I don’t know about your cities tonight, but mine is white as snow. Seriously. Snow is covering Raleigh is a warn, crystalized blanket tonight. Growing up, I didn’t like snow. I remember dreading snow is high school because that meant more school days in the summer. I didn’t really look forward to snow until college, because that is when you do not have to make up the days you miss. Exam schedules do not change. Homework assignments get pushed back, and at the end of the semester, the snow ended up giving you a much needed vacation. Guilt free.
Normally, I do not like the cold. I hate the way bitter cold feels on your face, and while I personally love layering my outfits, that cold still burns to much for my taste. But snow is different. My sophomore year of college, NC State had a big snow. Maybe 3 to 5 inches. School was cancelled for days. It was the year I established such a strong friendship with one of my best friends. It was the year I recovered from one of the worst heartbreaks I ever suffered. It was the year I met someone who, while never serious, spiced up my love life a little and provided an entire semester of fun. Hindsight being 20-20, it was a really good year. But that snow is one of the best memories I have at State.
I lived on the top floor of Lee Hall, which will disappear in the next few years. Nine floors up, I watched the snow blanket Raleigh, and in the morning hours, Brianna and I ventured out of the dorms to see what was happening on campus. We saw snowmen, and snowball fights, but nothing as exciting as what we found on the Court of North Carolina. Sledding. Extreme sledding. Hundreds of students gathered together throwing snowballs while waiting for their turn, and hundreds of students sledding in makeshift toboggans! Brianna and I stole a Senior Ring sign from Mann Hall, and retreated back to the Court. That sign worked like magic! Slick and fast! While not as much fun to watch, like the three men in the 50 gallon storage tub, that sign was like lightening as it slipped down the slope.
We played for hours with people who became good friends, and people we never saw again. We laughed, sledded and enjoyed the cold. That was the best snow I had seen in a long time. No worries. Just us, that sign, and hundreds of grown-ups acting like crazy kids. Unfortunately, the next year, NC State went forward with the plans to convert our sledding Utopia into a giant staircase and with the next snowfall, new students experienced a much different snow-filled scenario.
A memory. That is all that snowfall is now. A memory between friends and strangers shared by hundreds of students. I don’t know what memories this snow will bring, but as I look out my window tonight, I am excited to see what the morning brings.
What are your best snow memories?
XOXO
