“Vrrroom! Here it comes. That brand new 727 looking like some kind of…whatever. ” One of my favorite scenes in Home for the Holidays. The father is describing the plane landing and his daughter's excited expression wishing he had his whole life on film so he could relive all the small moments in life. This morning, I missed my flight, by a minute, and had to wait an hour for another one. RDU was surprisingly busy this morning at 5:30 a.m. and three of us just didn't make it. That was hours ago. Now we are up in the air from Charlotte heading off to Phoenix for the adventure. I call it the adventure, because I don't know what to expect.
This is the first flight I have ever made where family is not waiting for me on the other end. I love to fly, but the unknown landing is sometimes what is the most scary. Hoping on the flight and its connector was the easy part. Effortlessly, I walked on (after they threw away my hair mousse and toothpaste) and warmed right up to the feel of flight. The restlessness of waiting for take-off. The excitement as we ascend above the clouds. Aboard the plane, we listen to the voiced fears of tiny humans asking questions. As the engines roars to life, we are all gripped with adrenaline, prepared.
When Josh dropped me off this morning, I hugged him, told him I love him, and that I will call him tonight from Phoenix. As I walked into the airport, I realized that the opening scene of Love Actually is true. No one stood at the terminal drop off and said “I hope your plane crashes.” No one shouted obscenities, or words of hate. All goodbyes were those of love. “Have a safe flight.” “Call me when you land.” “I love you.” It is for that reason I love airports. They are homes of excitement and well wishes. Adventures find themselves underway in airports as people depart safety and security and head for unknown landings.

With fly-over states below us, and desert awaiting us, the adventure has just started, and it holds a multitude of new opportunities waiting for us.
